Research Interest

My research is focused on the improvement, mainstreaming and domestication of underutilized legumes for sustainable utilization. These crops hold significant potential for addressing future food security, nutritional diversity and climate change issues. An integrated approach of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics are followed for understanding the biosynthesis specific molecules in the biochemical pathways. A strategy for the genetic improvement of these underutilized legumes is followed by identifying key genetic markers and their corresponding association with specific metabolites through genome wide association studies. These studies uncover the genetic blueprint of these legumes, providing a foundation for understanding their unique traits.

Exploring the role of microRNAs and their targets in regulating gene expression with response to plant development and adaptation to environmental stresses is another domain of my research. Correlating the proteomic data with molecular mechanisms governing plant physiology and their responses to abiotic stresses is aimed for observing the climate-resilience features among these crops. Metabolomic profiling and their effective correlation with other omic-based studies reveal the important nutritional and anti-nutritional factors and their biochemical pathways of biosynthesis among these underutilized legumes.

Research

Applied Outcomes

The goal of my research is to contribute to the sustainable utilization of underutilized legumes for their mainstreaming and domestication. This involves developing improved underutilized legume varieties with higher yield, better nutritional quality and greater resilience to environmental stresses. It will support the future challenges of food security and agricultural diversity. By leveraging the advanced biotechnological tools and interdisciplinary approaches, my research endeavours to unlock the potential of these valuable underexploited legumes, paving the way for their wider acceptance and domestication.
